We are thrilled to announce that Mailen Design has been shortlisted for the AJ Retrofit & Reuse Awards 2024 in the Fit-out (Under £2m) category for our transformative work on Domus Campus!
We invite you to watch our new video showcasing the transformative space at Domus Campus and see first-hand the quality and innovation that merits this esteemed recognition. The video provides a visual journey through the various areas of the campus as occupants and guests interact with the environment, highlighting the meticulous design and innovative solutions implemented throughout.
Domus Campus exemplifies the excellence we strive for at Mailen Design, and having this project recognised by Architects Journal underscores our commitment to innovative design, sustainability, and seamless project delivery. By choosing retrofit over demolition, we have created a space that not only serves the immediate needs of our client but also redefines what sustainable architecture can look like in a commercial context. The project's focus on energy efficiency and whole-life carbon performance further highlights our dedication to wider environmental thinking and innovation.
ADAPTIVE AND FLEXIBLE DESIGN
Domus Campus redefines commercial space functionality, creating a vibrant and welcoming environment that caters to diverse business needs. The Clerkenwell hub can seamlessly transform from a bustling office space to an open event venue, enhancing stakeholder engagement. This flexibility optimises the campus for various functions, including sales activities, material research, exploration, and social gatherings. In the video, you can see both staff and customers enjoying the dynamic array of spaces, from collaborative workstations to relaxed social areas, reflecting the warm and bustling atmosphere we aimed to create.
INNOVATIVE MATERIALITY
The design of Domus Campus is distinguished by its deliberate focus on materiality and texture, resonating with Domus' interior design clientele. Unlike typical glossy showrooms, the campus features materials with natural tones and textures. A prime example is the La Pietra Compattata tiles, whose earthy, non-glossy finish enhances the space’s rich materiality. The bespoke terracotta chandelier, designed in collaboration with New Terracotta using advanced 3D BIM technology, embodies innovative use of space and material. The result is a warm, inviting environment that inspires staff and visitors alike.
SEAMLESS INTEGRATION
Connecting previously disconnected buildings into a cohesive workspace was a central challenge. We successfully transformed these disparate structures into a multifaceted space that epitomises Domus' values by promoting interaction and collaboration. This reconfiguration provides seamless access between all business areas, creating an interconnected ecosystem that fosters a vibrant and productive atmosphere with spaces to connect and unwind.
SUSTAINABLE SOLUTIONS
Sustainability was at the forefront of our strategy. By repurposing existing structures and implementing solutions to minimise waste, we significantly reduced the environmental impact associated with demolition and new construction. Features such as a highly efficient air temperature control system, self-closing doors to prevent energy leakage, and low-energy LED lighting all contribute to the project's sustainability. The use of recycled materials, like the Pietra Compattata tiles and reclaimed oak flooring, further exemplifies our commitment to environmental responsibility. As the video demonstrates, these sustainable features have been seamlessly integrated into the overall design.
A WINNING COLLABORATION
Our collaborative approach has been pivotal in achieving this milestone. From the outset, we worked closely with our longstanding client Domus Group, project partners, and community to ensure every detail aligns with our shared vision for a sustainable future. We would especially like to recognise Domus Team members Jon Newey (CEO), David Kong (Marketing Director) and Robyn Payne (Interior Design Manager) for their significant roles in bringing this project to life.
A heartfelt thank you to Domus Group for their trust and partnership, and to our incredible team for their unwavering dedication and exceptional work. Thank you as well to our longtime collaborator, architectural photographer Peter Landers, for his exceptional videography, capturing the essence of Domus Campus and the innovation that went into its creation.
The winners of the AJ Retrofit & Reuse Awards will be announced on Wednesday, 11 September 2024, at The Brewery, London. We are honoured to be in such esteemed company and look forward to celebrating with our peers in the industry.
