We are thrilled to announce that Mailen Design has received unanimous planning approval for GrowLab Organics, a groundbreaking community-owned medicinal cannabis production facility on the Isle of Man. This success marks a major milestone for both our teams, following years of close collaboration to realise a state-of-the-art facility that is innovative, operationally advanced, and designed to benefit the local community.
As a practice, our approach is defined by our dedication to fostering long-term client partnerships, integrating with our clients’ teams to provide steady support and strategic guidance from the earliest stages of visioning through to detailed planning. For GrowLab Organics, this meant guiding the pioneering medical cannabis company through complex planning landscapes, environmental standards, and community expectations to create a facility that is both operationally and environmentally exemplary. As we navigated the sometimes-contentious aspects of planning, our shared vision of sustainability and community-centric design kept the project moving forward with confidence and clarity.
This project’s success also represents an exciting milestone for Mailen Design, positioning us at the forefront of a new and evolving biomedical sector. Working alongside GrowLab Organics, we took on a dual role of architects and planning consultants, continuously refining our design to meet not only the functional demands of a highly specialised facility but also the Isle of Man’s stringent ecological standards. Together, we’ve incorporated features that reflect a deeply rooted commitment to sustainability, from rainwater harvesting systems to dark-sky-compliant lighting that preserves local wildlife habitats. GrowLab Organics will set a benchmark for sustainable architecture on the island, integrating resource-efficient materials and EV-ready infrastructure to ensure minimal environmental impact, whilst operating on the Green Energy Tariff to ensure zero carbon emissions from electricity use.
A particularly rewarding part of this collaboration has been engaging with the local community, a priority for both Mailen Design and GrowLab Organics from the outset. At the public event we hosted in Castletown Square last summer, we had the opportunity to connect with residents, share our vision, and gather invaluable feedback. This inclusive approach has shaped the project into something that not only serves our clients but also respects and contributes to the local community.
Through our partnership with GrowLab Organics, we’ve helped design a facility that represents more than just architectural achievement; it reflects a shared commitment to a resilient future for the Isle of Man. This planning success stands as a testament to the power of genuine partnerships and shared ideals, underscoring Mailen Design’s philosophy that great architecture emerges from strong, lasting relationships.
Stay tuned for updates as the facility progresses, and join us in celebrating this important step towards a sustainable and prosperous future for the Isle of Man. With planning permission now secured, GrowLab Organics will not only serve as a model for sustainable architecture within the biomedical sector, but also proof that strong, long-lasting client relationships are at the heart of meaningful and impactful architecture.
