01

Design philosophy

Our clients sought to convert Owlscote Barn into a modern UK home whilst honouring its historical significance. The transformation required meticulous attention to the conservation of the barn's original features, extensive structural repairs, and the integration of advanced smart home technology. The renovation of Owlscote Barn was underpinned by a commitment to craftsmanship and environmental responsibility, pivotal in preserving the barn’s heritage whilst adapting it for sustainable modern living.

02

Challenges and solutions

Maintaining the barn’s historical timber framework and masonry was crucial. Extensive repairs were undertaken, with careful restoration or replacement of timber elements. Brickwork was meticulously deconstructed and reassembled using traditional techniques and natural lime pointing, ensuring longevity whilst preserving original patterns. Incorporating modern amenities without compromising historical character was a significant challenge. We introduced a steel mezzanine to maximise usable space, and seamlessly integrated energy-efficient fixtures and smart home controls. The project also included constructing an annex building, creating a light-filled home gym and social space.

03

Sustainability

Thoughtful material selection and a focus on energy performance were key components of our sustainable approach to Owlscote Barn. We utilised locally sourced natural materials to reduce transportation emissions and support local industries and employed traditional techniques to restore the barn's features, ensuring the preservation of its historic essence. Solar panels and energy-efficient fixtures were installed to align the barn with contemporary environmental standards. Smart home controls allow the clients to manage the home’s environmental systems remotely, further reducing its carbon footprint.

04

Outcome

Owlscote Barn features a harmonious blend of historical and contemporary architectural elements. A steel mezzanine maximises the internal volume, providing additional living space whilst maintaining an open, airy feel. Large windows flood the interior with natural light, enhancing the barn’s spaciousness and creating a bright, welcoming environment. The annex building, constructed using materials that complement the original structure, serves as a versatile space for social gatherings and fitness activities, adding functionality to the property.
