01

Design philosophy

Hotto Potto’s design integrates contemporary aesthetics with the traditional communal experience of Chinese hot-pot dining. The space is carefully arranged to support both private gatherings and communal dining, reflecting the versatility needed in a vibrant East London setting. Bespoke elements, such as custom-designed hot pot stations and unique artwork, further enrich the dining experience, blending traditional motifs with modern design principles. Each area within the restaurant is crafted to foster a seamless transition between the dynamic communal spaces and more intimate private settings, showcasing our ability to create environments that are both functional and visually compelling.

03

Sustainability

Sustainability was thoughtfully woven into the design of Hotto Potto, with a focus on using natural and durable materials such as timber and ceramics. These materials were selected for their longevity and reduced environmental impact. The inclusion of large windows maximises natural light, decreasing the need for artificial lighting during the day and creating a bright, inviting atmosphere. This integration of sustainable practices enhances the dining experience whilst reflecting our commitment to environmentally conscious design.

Challenges and solutions

One of the primary challenges at Hotto Potto was integrating individual cooking stations at each table while ensuring that the space remained comfortable and free from lingering cooking aromas. To address this, we designed custom in-table ventilation systems that efficiently manage the air quality, allowing diners to enjoy the hot-pot experience without disruption. Another challenge was balancing the bright, functional lighting necessary for dining with a warm and inviting atmosphere. We achieved this by carefully selecting lighting fixtures and placements that offer both clarity and comfort, creating a cohesive ambiance that extends from the main dining area to the more intimate karaoke suites below.

Outcome

Hotto Potto has become a vibrant social hub in East London, celebrated for its dynamic design and engaging atmosphere. The restaurant’s thoughtful layout, featuring custom hot pot stations, innovative in-table ventilation, and a dedicated karaoke floor, has made it a standout destination for communal dining and entertainment. This project has not only enhanced social connectivity but also contributed to our recognition in the industry, helping us secure a shortlist position for Retail and Leisure Architect of the Year at Building Design's Architect of the Year Awards. Hotto Potto exemplifies our ability to create engaging, versatile restaurant spaces that resonate with both patrons and the wider hospitality sector.
