Redevelopment of major UK Department Store

Fenwick’s Newcastle store is the third largest department store in the UK and is an important part of the social history of the North East. The Northumberland Street building became the first Fenwick store when it was bought by JJ Fenwick in 1882. It has expanded many times since then and is the headquarters of the company that has eight other stores around the country.

Following an in depth historical and functional investigation and subsequent design feasibility study Mailen Design were appointed as Architect of the first major phase of redevelopment in 50 years to this key Newcastle retail icon. The refurbishment of Fenwick’s flagship Newcastle department store coincides with the launch of its 140th anniversary celebrations.

The changes, which will be carried out in phases over the next five years, will involve creating new entrances, multiple new internal atria, renovation of the historic façade, and complete renovation of the ground floor beauty hall.

Alongside redevelopment of the store the practice is working alongside Newcastle City Council and other city centre landowners on the redevelopment of the surrounding external public realm as part of the City’s town centre regeneration programme.
