Domus Battersea

Modular new-build extension to existing product showroom & gallery

Mailen Design have worked on a number of Domus’ showrooms, but this scheme is the practice’s most ambitious project to date for the tile supplier. Nestled into an irregular, land-locked and once brownfield site at the end of the showroom, a geometric steel structure creates a new inspiring destination in the existing longitudinal showroom.

The main body of the building is surrounded by late Victorian terraced houses and lies within the Parktown Estate Conservation Area, Battersea. The building is concealed from outside with only a 4 metre wide shopfront marking its presence on the street. Access to the showroom from the main entrance is via an 18 metre long corridor.

The use of considered geometry and prefabricated building elements greatly reduced costs and improved viability. The carefully designed new structure extends the showroom to provide a flexible sales and gallery space that respects the robust character of the existing industrial building. Meticulously detailed exposed steelwork and bespoke triangular rooflights create an enlivening interior full of natural light, for which we designed a suite of bespoke furniture. The showroom is fully accessible with level access from the entrance and out to two external terraces. The terraces give the opportunity to display Domus’ exterior products and provide breakout spaces for staff.
