Winning the prestigious Architecture MasterPrize for Weald House marks a proud milestone in Mailen Design's journey, underscoring our dedication to innovative and sustainable architecture. This recognition celebrates not just the design excellence of Weald House but the ethos it represents—architecture rooted in its environment and crafted to harmonise with the needs of its occupants.
The award ceremony, hosted on Monday at the iconic Guggenheim Bilbao Museum, offered a moment of reflection and celebration. Representing our team were Haizea Latxaga and Garazi Murua, who joined our project collaborator, Peter Bradford, in accepting this accolade. The event unfolded in the stunning surroundings of the Guggenheim, where attendees enjoyed private access to its exhibitions before a gala dinner and awards presentation honouring outstanding contributions to architecture worldwide.
Nestled into the Kentish landscape, Weald House is a modern reinterpretation of the traditional black barn, combining timeless aesthetic principles with sustainable practices. Its low-lying design embraces the natural contours of its setting, creating a home that feels both grounded and contemporary. Full-height glazing offers sweeping views of surrounding meadows and woodland, whilst thoughtful material choices, such as blackened timber cladding and zinc roof with integrated rainwater harvesting system, reflect a sensitive and sustainable approach to architecture. Designed in partnership with Peter Bradford Architects, Weald House evolved through close consultation with our clients. Their vision for a family home that offered openness, privacy, and a connection to nature inspired every design decision, from the spatial layout to the material palette.
Receiving the Architecture MasterPrize for Weald House is a meaningful affirmation of our approach to architecture—one that celebrates craftsmanship, collaboration, and respect for context. This recognition belongs not only to our team but to the clients, collaborators, and builders who brought Weald House to life.
As we continue to strive for excellence, this moment reminds us of the impact architecture can have in fostering connections between people and the natural world. We extend our deepest gratitude to the Architecture MasterPrize for this honour and to all who have been part of this journey.
